Hi, this is Kaori from Hidari.

If you enjoy crafting, modeling, or DIY projects, you know how important it is to have tools that are sharp, reliable, and easy to control. And if you're left-handed like me, you've probably had moments of frustration with tools that just weren't built for us.

That's why I'm excited to share a favorite of mine—the Precision Utility Knife. It's made in Japan, has a smart design that works just as well for left-handed users as it does for right-handed ones, and is packed with features that make it a joy to use.

What Makes a Japanese Utility Knife Different?

In Japan, what many in the U.S. refer to as a box cutter or utility knife is commonly known as a "cutter knife." The design has a long history here—and for good reason. One of the most iconic names is Olfa, the company that introduced the world's first snap-off blade utility knife back in 1956.

That idea—being able to snap off a dull blade section and keep going with a fresh edge—was revolutionary. The name "Olfa" itself comes from the Japanese words oru (to fold) and ha (blade).

The
left-handed utility knife we're introducing today builds on that innovation. It uses the same snap-off system, so you're always working with a clean, sharp edge. No fiddling with replacements every time your blade gets dull.

Sharper Blade, Cleaner Cuts

We've talked about our multipurpose Orante Utility Knife before, but this model is designed for tasks that require precision and detail.

Most Japanese utility knives are made with a 60° blade angle—but this one takes it a step further with a fine 30° blade tip. It's a subtle difference that makes a huge impact, especially when you're working on detailed tasks like model building or intricate paperwork.

I use mine for packaging, crafting, and even for sharpening pencils (yep, it's that precise). The visibility and control this blade offers help you cut more accurately and get a cleaner finish without rough edges or unintentional tears.

Easy for Left-Handed and Right-Handed Users

One of the standout features of this knife is the top-mounted slider—a small detail that makes it easy to use no matter which hand you favor. As a lefty, I can say that finding a utility knife that doesn't fight against your natural hand motion is such a relief.

It's comfortable to hold thanks to its triangular grip, which feels steady in your hand and even lets you use it like a pen for ultra-precise work. The knife also includes some thoughtful extras: a thread-cutting slot that works with the blade retracted and a built-in snapper on the back so you can refresh the blade safely.

Built to Last with Good Design

This knife isn't just practical—it's beautifully designed, too. It's won Japan's Good Design Award for combining functionality with clean aesthetics. And it holds up well over time, even with regular use.

If you need replacement blades, we have those available, too, so you'll always be stocked and ready.
