A Traditional Japanese Thin-Blade Sickle, Designed for Left-Handers

Holding a 180 mm (7.1 in) left-handed Banshu thin-blade sickle

Hello, this is Kaori from HIDARI.

Did you know that most gardening tools are designed for right-handed users?
In fact, tools that truly work well for left-handed people are still surprisingly hard to find around the world.

Today, we’d like to introduce the Banshu Grass Sickle – Thin Blade—a traditional Japanese weeding tool, specially designed for left-handed use.

A Traditional Tool from Banshu, Japan

Banshu Grass Sickle – Thin Blade 165mm (6.5 in.) / Left-Handed

The Banshu sickle has been widely used across Japan for over 100 years.
This model is made by Takemoto Sickle Works, founded in 1912 in Ono City, Hyogo—an area known for its long-standing blade-making tradition.

Even today, each sickle is carefully crafted using traditional techniques.
The skills and experience built up over generations support its reliable sharpness and smooth performance.

While preserving traditional sickle-making methods, the workshop also actively develops new styles suited to modern life, as well as tools for gardening and outdoor use.

Traditional Craftsmanship for a Smooth, Effortless Cut

This sickle features a single-bevel blade designed specifically for left-handed users.
With only one side sharpened, the blade naturally catches and guides the grass, allowing for precise and controlled cutting.

The “thin blade” design is another key feature. The steel is honed to an extremely fine edge, making the blade remarkably light.
The moment I first held it, I was genuinely surprised by how light it felt.

In addition, the back of the blade is slightly concave—a traditional technique known as suki-togi.
This reduces friction between the blade and the grass, allowing it to glide smoothly rather than tear.

It is said that this unique sharpening method was first developed by swordsmiths in the Banshu region, and it continues to be used today in traditional blade-making.

Three Sizes for Different Gardening Needs
